Comments
This portrait has been commonly identified as James Brudenell, 5th Earl of Cardigan (1725-1811). Alternatively, within 'A History of the Works of Sir Joshua Reynolds' by A. Graves and W.V. Cronin (volume I, 1899, p.117) it is identified as Thomas Brudenell, 'Lieut-Col. of the 2nd Regiment of Dragoon Guards', after a portrait painted in 1757.
In fact, the work bears a striking resemblance to a 1764/70 Reynolds portrait of George Bridges Brudenell (c.1726-1801), who served as MP for Rutland and Stamford (sold through Dreweatts 1759, Newbury, on 6 April 2016, Lot 30).
Reynolds' sitters book does include two earlier payments against George Bridges Brudenell's name, with the note 'Mr. G. Brudnell [sic] for M. Paunsfort' (Edward Pauncefort was an agent for Brudenell properties). It has been suggested that the entry references a portrait of Pauncefort but perhaps it describes a now untraced portrait of G.B. Brudenell, after which this print was made.
